How to Parameterize a Light and Broad Resonance (the Σ Meson) * )

چکیده
The evidence for the existence of a light and broad resonance in I=J=0 ππ scattering process – named as the σ resonance – has been accumulated, and more and more physicists working on the subject accepted the renaissance of the σ resonance. Among those works, model independent analysis 1), 2) are vital in clarifying the issue whether the σ resonance exists or not, since one has to distinguish and separate the contribution of a broad resonance to the phase motion from background contributions, and the latter is often very difficult, if not impossible, to estimate. However, there are different opinions in the literature against the existence of the light σ resonance 3), based upon the following observation: the ππ phase shift does not pass 90 at low energies, which would have occurred, according to Eq. (1.7) given below, at s = M2 with M the Breit–Wigner mass which should be light. This question is actually already answered, in one aspect, by Ishida and collaborators. 4) who pointed out that chiral symmetry requires the background contribution to the phase shift in I=J=0 ππ scatterings to be negative,∗∗) Ishida and collaborators argue that the background phase cancels the large phase motion generated by the Breit–Wigner resonance and therefore there is no contradiction between the observed ππ phase shift and the existence of a light and broad resonance. In this talk I will further point out that a conventional Breit-Wigner description to the σ resonance actually violates chiral symmetry and should be abandoned, and it is not even necessary for a light and broad resonance to develop a phase shift passing 90.

متن کاملHow can one understand the lightest scalars , especially the σ
We discuss how the a 0 (980), f 0 (980), K * 0 (1430) and particularly the broad σ resonance can be understood within a coupled channel framework, which includes all light two-pseudoscalar thresholds together with constraints from Adler zeroes, flavour symmetric couplings, unitarity and physically acceptable analyticity. All q ¯ q scalars are, when uni-tarized, strongly distorted by hadronic ma...

We discuss how the lightest scalars, in particular the broad σ resonance, can be understood as unitarized qq̄ states within a unitarized quark model (UQM). The bare qq̄ scalars are strongly distorted by hadronic mass shifts, and the uū+ dd̄ state becomes a very broad resonance, with its pole at 470-i250 MeV. This is the sigma meson required by models for spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry. We...
متن کاملProperty of σ(600) and Chiral Symmetry
The chiral symmetry and the notion of its dynamical breaking have been playing a central role in understanding the spectroscopy of hadrons with light-quarks. Presently the non-linear representation (Non-Linear σ Model(NLσM)) of chiral SU(2)L×SU(2)R group is widely accepted to be realized in nature on the basis of the success of low energy theorems concerning π mesons as Nambu-Goldstone bosons. ...

We discuss the classification of the light scalar mesons with mass below 2 GeV into qq̄ nonets and glueballs. The information on production and decay of these states, in particular recent information on the f0(980), f0(400−1200) (or σ(600)) and f0(1500) is considered. Although the data are not yet very precise the recent information is in favour of the previously developed scheme which includes ...
